Product management workshop

Advanced Product Discovery

This is a deep dive into continuous discovery for people who already do this job. We cover structured interviews, opportunity mapping, and assumption testing, and build them into a rhythm your team can actually sustain.

Who this workshop is for

This one assumes the basics. It's built for teams who know the vocabulary and are ready to change how they work. It's the right fit if you:

  • Run discovery in bursts before a big bet and want it running continuously instead
  • Talk to customers, but come away with anecdotes rather than decisions
  • Have a roadmap full of solutions and no map of the problems underneath them
  • Keep validating after you've already committed the quarter
  • Have taken Intro to Agile Product Management or its equivalent and want the next level

What you'll learn

The day runs in four blocks, each with an exercise run on your product and your current roadmap.

Structured customer interviews

  • Interview guides that surface behavior instead of opinion
  • Recruiting a steady stream of participants without a research team
  • Running the interview, and the discipline of not selling

Opportunity solution trees

  • Mapping outcomes to opportunities to the solutions you might try
  • Choosing which branch to pursue, and defending that choice
  • Keeping the tree alive as you learn

Rapid assumption testing

  • Naming the assumptions a bet depends on
  • Sorting them by what a wrong answer would cost
  • Designing the smallest test that would change your mind

Building the habit

  • Fitting discovery into an existing delivery cadence
  • Who does what, and what to stop doing to make room
  • Sharing findings so they reach the decisions that need them

Why take it with Phase Won

Continuous discovery is easy to admire and hard to sustain. Most teams come back from a course energized, run four interviews, and stop when the quarter gets loud. The difference here is that we design the cadence for your team's real constraints during the workshop, including who gives up what to make room.

If a single high-stakes decision is the problem rather than the habit, a Design Sprint gets you an answer in a week. If the habit is the problem, this is the workshop.

What you take with you

  1. An interview kit. Guide templates, recruiting scripts, and a synthesis format that produces decisions rather than notes.
  2. Your own opportunity tree. Built during the workshop from your real outcomes, not a case study.
  3. A test backlog. Your riskiest assumptions, sorted, with the first tests designed.
  4. A cadence plan. What discovery looks like on your team next month, week by week.

Common questions

Do we need to have interviews lined up?

Not for the workshop itself. But if you're running the two half-day format, having a few participants scheduled between sessions makes the second day much stronger.

Is this a certification?

No. It's a hands-on workshop with a certificate of completion. The Scrum Alliance credentials are on the training page.

How does this relate to the AI for Product Owners course?

AI for Product Owners covers using generative AI in the day-to-day of owning a product. This workshop is about the discovery practice itself: talking to people and testing what you believe.

What if only one or two people on the team do discovery?

That's usually a symptom worth addressing. Bring the engineers and designers too. The cadence block works better when the people who'll be affected by it are in the room.

Ready to make discovery a habit?

Tell me how your team runs discovery today and where it breaks down. I'll come back with a format recommendation and a quote within two business days.
